Trick Or Treating Tips For Parents

Halloween is just around the corner! If you or your kids are heading out for some trick or treating this year, make sure to be safe. BentallGreenOak Residential Services has some tips for parents for how to keep the kiddos safe.

Check Your Bag

Before you let your kids dig in and enjoy their treats, make sure you inspect all the candy. Get rid of anything that looks like it might have been opened. And if it looks homemade, bin it. It's better not to take any chances! Do your kids have allergies? Make sure to watch out for anything that might have nuts, seeds or any other allergens in it.

Dress Warmly and Comfortably

Whatever you do, make sure your kids are comfortable when heading out. Their costume should fit properly and their shoes should be comfy. Also, keep in mind that it might be a chilly night so you're going to want to dress them warmly. Check the weather on the day and layer up. Even though temperatures might be mild in the early evening, they can easily drop throughout the night.

Test Out Make-up Before Trick-or-Treating

If a costume requires face paint or make-up, it's probably a good idea to test it out before Halloween to make sure your kiddo doesn't have an allergic reaction to it. This way you can avoid having an upset kid on Halloween Day. When they're done for the night, remove the make-up to avoid any irritation.

Don't Enter A Stranger's Home

This might seem obvious, but your child should never enter someone's home. If you have to mention it to them more than once, do it! It's better to be safe than sorry. In case they are invited to enter someone's home, the best thing to do in this situation is to decline politely and walk away. Another good tip is to avoid homes that don't have any lights on. It could not be safe or the owners are just not in the Halloween spirit.

Go With A Group

When trick-or-treating with young kids, they should always be accompanied by an adult. If they are a bit older and want to separate themselves from parents, then it's best if they do so as a group. They will always be safer in a group than in pairs.

Happy Halloween from BentallGreenOak! We hope you enjoy your night out trick-or-treating.
