Make your apartment look bright when it's dreary outside

Once the brilliant colours of fall begin to fade, and the leaves have fallen from the trees, we are left with the other side of fall – rainfall. Here are some tips to make your apartment feel brighter on dark and dreary, rainy fall days.

Lighten up

We’re not just talking about your mood here! Literally lighting up your space is an easy and effective way to brighten things up. Maybe your space is dim because you’re in need of a higher bulb wattage? You may want to opt for long lasting and energy efficient LED bulbs, just be sure you use the correct wattage for your lamp or fixtures. If things still feel a little dim, consider adding a floor lamp or table lamp. When the light source comes from different angles, it’s easier to avoid dark corners.

Consider your furniture

Dark hued sofas and chairs, or dark tables, can really alter the tone of a room. While it may not be practical to swap out your furniture to suit your mood, a simple, stretchable slip cover can go a long way to lightening things up. While you’re at it, check that the positioning of your furniture isn’t blocking any sources of light. A simple rearrangement may do the trick!

Mirror, mirror on the wall…

Another way to make your apartment feel brighter, as well as larger, is to add a mirror to the wall, or even a full length floor mirror. When the mirror is positioned to reflect natural light from a window, your apartment will feel brighter all day long.

Treat yourself to new window treatments

There is nothing better than natural light, even on dark and dreary days, getting as much light into your living space is key. Heavy curtains are great for privacy, but be sure to pull them open during the day. If privacy is an issue, you could switch to blinds that can be partially opened to an angle. If you live on an upper floor, top-down bottom-up semi-sheer window shades may be perfect for you. Sheer curtains are also a great way to let the light in, without feeling like you’re on display.

We hope these tips help make your apartment look bright when it's dreary outside.
