How to teach kids about sustainability

Want to help ensure the health of our planet? Your little ones are the future! Here's how to teach your kiddos about sustainability and encourage them to make green choices.

Recycle together

Your kids consume packages too. The next time they finish a juice box or a yogurt, show them how to dispose of it responsibly in your recycling bin. Explain why we recycle (to prevent reusable materials that do not decompose from winding up in landfill).

Plant something with them

We need green things for a greener future. Even if you live in a high-rise apartment, you can plant something and help it grow. Visit your local garden centre to buy an apartment-friendly plant or seed, bring it home to plant in a pot with your child and teach them how to care for it.

Grocery shop together

What we eat matters from a sustainability perspective. Show your child how to eat for the planet by taking them grocery shopping for eco-friendly foods like local and organic fruits and vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and sustainable seafood. Buy dried goods and nut butters in bulk with your own reusable containers whenever possible to cut down on packaging.

Watch a movie with them

There are many good films and documentaries to watch about sustainability. Engaging films can be a great way to teach children about something you care about without preaching to them. Pop some popcorn and make a night of it.

We hope these tips help you teach your kiddos about sustainability! There's no time like the present to talk about our future.
