Green goals for the new year

Want to reduce your carbon footprint this year? Here are some attainable goals you can set for yourself as you embark on 2023.

Walk and ride your bike more

If you drive everywhere, and you don't have to (due to physical need, proximity to your destination etc.), consider a new method of transportation whenever possible. This could be walking, cycling, rollerblading etc. Switching to greener methods of transportation can have a big impact over the long term. If you're worried about carrying things with you or picking them up, invest in a shopping trolley or a bike basket

Eat more plants and less meat

One of the biggest ways individuals can fight climate change is by eating more plants and less meat. Try to squeeze in more plant based meals into your day and reduce the number of meaty meals you eat each week. Plant based eating is very good for your health, too!

Recycle and divert waste

Recycling and diverting waste from landfills is a worthwhile endeavour. If you live in an apartment, be sure to carefully separate your recycling from your trash and deposit your items in the correct receptacles.

Ditch single-use plastic

The world is drowning in plastic. You can help by stopping using and purchasing single-use plastic items like plastic straws,  containers and water bottles. Switch to reusable straws, containers and bottles instead made of materials like glass and metal.

Buy second hand and upcycle

Things like fast fashion and fast furniture pose big environmental and ethical problems. Instead of buying new and cheap clothes and furniture, dabble in vintage and second hand instead. You'd be amazed at how fun it can be to search for second hand treasures at charity shops, antique stores and thrift stores. You can also upcycle your existing clothes and furniture to breathe new life into what you already have.

We hope these tips help you start the new year on the right foot and set some attainable green goals for 2023.
