Family Day Activities for the Family

Family Day should be used for what really counts -- spending time with your loved ones. It's about gathering with the people in your life that matter most and having fun together. It's also a rare long weekend in the middle of winter that gives us a little R&R when we need it most. To help you make the most of Family Day this year, the team at BentallGreenOak Residential Services brings you this list of Family Day activities for the family.

Eat Out

The Family Day long weekend is a great time to eat out together. Best of all, there's no cooking or dishwashing required! Be a little adventurous and choose a cuisine your family hasn't tried yet. You don't have to try scary foods like  frog legs, tripe, hooves, or tail. Just try something new. Pick a country on a globe or a map. Check the internet for interesting national cuisines. Many times authentic restaurants will have interesting decor, making a dine-in experience worthwhile. If not, takeout and a movie is always a good option.

See a Movie

Seeing a movie is a great choice for Family Day. It's the perfect holiday hang outside the house because movies have it all: popcorn, drinks, comfy seats, and big screens. Maybe treat the fam to a VIP experience and tuck in to those reclining, lazy-boy style seats. Great minds think alike though, so be sure to buy tickets early and show up a good 30 mins before start time.

Ski, Snowboard or Ice Fish

Get out of town for the weekend! You could go snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing ice-skating, or even ice-fishing. If you can't get away, there are plenty of options for the city dweller like tobogganing, skating at an outdoor rink, or going for a walk in the park.

Get Cooking

Pie crusts, pasta, biscuits, and pizza are all great options for a family cooking project. Kids love squishing dough with their fingers and kneading it into shapes, and watching dough rise or eating icing. Tacos or Quesadillas also make for great options as they're easy to make and fun to eat.

Don't do Anything. Or, do Everything

The average kid has something planned for almost every night of the week -- karate, swimming, piano, dance, figure skating, hockey, chess club. There's not a lot of unstructured time anymore. Give the kids (and yourself) a much needed rest this Family Day weekend. Open ended play time is super beneficial. It forces kids to be bored and to get creative. And hey, sometimes a whole day of watching TV in pajamas is pretty great.
