Easy Eco-Friendly Hacks

It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of problems in the world today. Our environmental situation is no exception. While it may seem like one person can't make much impact, they can. The actions of conscious individuals add up. The famous Margaret Mead quote really rings true -- "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." To help you do your part for a greener, sustainable future, the team at BentallGreenOak Residential Services brings you this list of eco friendly life hacks.

Eco-friendly Laundry Regimen

Do your laundry in off-peak hours (any time early morning or after 5 or 6pm). Wash your loads in cold water and on a shorter "express" time setting. Make sure your loads are full -- don't only wash a hand towel and 3 t-shirts. Use eco-friendly detergents without chemicals, perfumes, and dyes. Avoid using the dryer by hanging as much of your laundry as possible to save on dryer cost and power use.  See more.

Bike or Walk to work

One of the best ways to get and stay active is to walk. Better yet, bike. They're both great ways to build up your endurance and improve your overall fitness. If you are able to bike or walk to work, you can even save money on gas/transit, and reduce stress by getting outside. While the weather is always an issue, biking and walking can both be lovely - and green - ways to commute. Learn more.

Use Public Transit

Taking transit isn't always a great way to get around. There are often a ton of people to work your way around as you go, which can be quite stressful, and slow you down. Trains and buses are routinely late. There are never open seats. Fares keep going up while service stays the same. But taking the bus or subway is better for the planet than driving. Taking public transit uses less energy per capita, saves commuters money on parking, and reduces time wasted stuck in traffic. Read more.

Use cloth or reusable grocery bags

Plastic bags are an already monstrous environmental problem. They have a lifespan of maybe two uses. While it can be annoying and difficult to remember, try packing 2 or 3 cloth grocery bags in every bag, backpack, car, or purse that you have. Making them readily available will make it easier to use them. Learn more.

Use less AC

While stern government regulations in recent years have caused the reduction of HFCs released by air conditioners, the real problem with AC - energy use - hasn't changed much. Widespread air conditioning usage I a serious energy drain. And as global temperatures continue to rise, so does the need for AC. Close your blinds, make heat-free meals, take a cold shower, and try other ways to stay cool without AC. Read more

Eat Less Meat

When it comes to pollution, animal farming for meat production is as bad or worse than fossil fuel usage. From added hormones, to chemical and natural waste production, to water runoff and contamination, to the far higher cost and food requirements for raising animals, and even methane gas pollution, there's a big case against meat consumption, and a great argument for going veg -- at least for a meal or two a week. Check it out.
