Fend off S.A.D.

S.A.D. stands for seasonal affective disorder. It's a type of depression and it is tied to changes in seasons. If you suffer from S.A.D., your symptoms may begin in the fall and continue into winter. It can make you feel exhausted and moody. Like magic, your symptoms may vanish in spring and summer. Some people, however, feel depressed in spring or early summer and better during the fall or winter. Not sure if you have it? Watch for these signs and symptoms:

  • Feeling listless, sad or down most of the day, nearly every day
  • Losing interest in activities
  • Feeling sluggish
  • Strong carb cravings
  • Overeating and weight gain
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilty
  • Oversleeping
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Poor appetite and weight loss
  • Agitation or anxiety
  • Moodiness

If you think you have S.A.D., talk to your doctor and/or psychiatrist to get diagnosed and work out a treatment plan. Common treatments include psychotherapy, vitamin D supplements, light therapy and medications.

Meditate, then meditate some more

Studies have shown that practicing meditation can improve your mood and mental health. It can be done by anyone, anywhere, virtually any time, so give it a try. One meditation session may help calm your mind in an anxious moment, but if you want long lasting effects, you need to build a meditation practice and be consistent. Thankfully there are many meditation tutorials, videos, apps and teachers out there to guide you along the way!
